The meninges and cerebrospinal fluid

The meninges, whether cranial or spinal, consist of three layers: duramater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. Between the arachnoid and the piamater is the subarachnoid space, in which cerebrospinal fluid circulates. Notice that the CSF is vulnerable to contamination by
microbes carried in the blood that are able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier at the walls of the blood vessels.
